When I Would Pause a DG Shipment
A difficult shipment deserves a careful plan. An unresolved problem deserves a clear explanation—not a rushed promise.

Short Answer
If the cargo information cannot support review, packaging concerns remain unresolved, or the required timeline cannot be confirmed, the next step is to pause and clarify. Where a workable alternative exists, explain it with its costs and limits.
Classification, packing and acceptance remain subject to the current edition of applicable regulations, carrier review and port requirements. Confirm before shipment.
Separate difficulty from an unresolved prerequisite
Unusual cargo can require more coordination without being unsuitable for transport. The question is whether the necessary information and handling arrangements can be established.
Missing information should become a specific action: who supplies it, what it needs to address and when it will be available. A vague concern is not a useful answer to a customer.
Offer an alternative that addresses the problem
An alternative may involve correcting documents, changing packaging or reviewing another sailing. Each option needs its own feasibility check.
Changing the route does not change what the product is. Classification cannot be selected to obtain a more convenient commercial outcome.
Keep the boundary clear
A customer may choose between feasible schedules or accept a clearly explained commercial trade-off. That is different from waiving a safety requirement or proceeding with inaccurate information.
If the unresolved issue prevents the agreed operation, explain why it must stop and what would allow a fresh assessment. A responsible refusal should leave the customer with clarity.
Questions I get asked about this
- Do you turn down difficult cargo?
- Difficulty alone is not the deciding factor. The cargo and proposed arrangement need a supportable assessment.
- Can a different sailing help?
- It may solve a timing issue, but it will not fix inaccurate documents or unsuitable packaging.
- Can I waive the requirement?
- Customer approval cannot replace applicable requirements or carrier acceptance.
- What should I expect if you cannot take it?
- A clear explanation of the obstacle and, where identifiable, the information or change needed for reassessment.
