Lithium Battery Shipping from Shanghai
Start a lithium battery enquiry with the actual battery type, model, condition and shipping configuration. Those facts need to match the documents before a sea-freight plan can be assessed.
The short version
Check battery identity, condition and shipping configuration together; neither a product label nor a test-summary date decides the shipment.

Short Answer
Describe the battery chemistry and model, whether it travels alone, packed with equipment or installed in equipment, and its condition. Provide available product information and the matching UN38.3 test summary for review. An older issue date alone is not an expiry conclusion. Classification, packing and the proposed carrier service need their own checks.
Classification, packing and acceptance remain subject to the current edition of applicable regulations, carrier review and port requirements. Confirm before shipment.
What actually ships in this category?
Standalone cells or batteries, batteries packed with equipment and batteries contained in equipment are distinct shipping configurations. A complete vehicle or energy-storage installation needs its own assessment rather than a description copied from a small battery shipment.
Identify the actual chemistry instead of treating all products sold as lithium batteries as interchangeable. Provide the relevant technical specifications for that design, and ask the manufacturer to clarify marketing terms that do not identify it reliably.
New, used, returned, damaged, recalled and waste batteries need their condition made explicit. Do not book an ordinary service while withholding swelling, leakage or an abnormal thermal event.
What information should we check?
These are review fields, not default classifications. Establish the applicable classification from product evidence and current rules; confirm carrier acceptance separately.
| Field | Review point | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Battery identity | Manufacturer, model and chemistry | Product descriptions and supporting documents must be traceable to the actual design. |
| Shipping configuration | Alone / packed with / contained in equipment | These descriptions help identify the applicable entry; they are not a complete classification on their own. |
| UN and transport description | Confirm for the actual cargo | Do not apply a lithium-ion entry to every battery chemistry or copy a device entry onto a complete vehicle. |
| UN38.3 evidence | Match the design and supporting information | Check product correspondence, design changes and applicable requirements. Do not invent a universal annual expiry for a test summary. |
| Condition and technical data | Report the actual state | Supply applicable specifications and requested charge-state information; do not transfer an air-freight restriction automatically to sea freight. |
Review fields, not an approval
What information and documents should we prepare?
This is our review and coordination checklist, not a universal statutory document list. The applicable items and responsible parties depend on the actual cargo, route and service.
- Battery / equipment specificationsRequired
Manufacturer, model, chemistry, configuration, condition and relevant ratings.
- Available SDS and UN38.3 test summaryConditional
Send matching evidence; identify missing documents and establish the applicable requirements before dispatch.
- Packing data and photographsRequired
Package count, dimensions, weights and visible condition.
- UN38.3 test report for formal bookingConditional
Our lithium-battery FCL booking checklist requests the test report. A test summary is not the full report; confirm applicability for this shipment.
- Carrier application, packaging evidence and later DG filingsConditional
Prepare by stage. Where a packaging use-appraisal document is unavailable, establish the applicable route and additional evidence; a transport appraisal is not an automatic substitute.
- Special-condition informationConditional
Report used, damaged, recalled, returned or waste status before any collection is arranged.
Should this go FCL or LCL?
Full container
FCL can be compared where quantity, handling and the loading plan favour a dedicated container. It does not remove classification, packing or acceptance requirements.
Consolidation
Confirm the actual route and consolidation service before dispatch. Review the proposed cargo combination in advance; warehouse receipt is not a substitute for that review, and small quantity does not automatically mean LCL acceptance.
What actually goes wrong?
These are review points to resolve before dispatch, not findings about a particular shipment.
01A test summary that cannot be linked to the design
Ask the manufacturer to explain the model relationship and any changes. A recent date does not prove a match, and an old date alone does not prove expiry.
02The documents describe a different configuration
State whether batteries travel separately, with equipment or inside it. Notify changes before treating an earlier plan as still applicable.
03Condition information arrives too late
Damage, recall or disposal status may change the available assessment path. Make the condition visible at enquiry stage.
04Packing details are assumed
Confirm the proposed protection, packing and handling with the appropriate parties. Correct product documents do not validate every package.
What does the carrier actually review?
Carrier review is not guaranteed acceptance
The carrier reviews the proposed shipment against its acceptance conditions. Provide matching design evidence, actual condition, packing and route information, and clarify outstanding requirements. A test summary is not a booking approval; neither is a quotation.
Identify the cargo
Record the model, chemistry, configuration and condition.
Match the evidence
Resolve differences between product markings, specifications and supporting documents with the issuer.
Check the proposed packing
Confirm applicable protection, marking and handling requirements for this arrangement.
Obtain the service response
Submit the actual proposal and agree the relevant deadlines before dispatch.
Keep the operation aligned
Notify changes and track loading, document and terminal milestones with the responsible parties.
Questions I get asked most often
- Can I enquire before knowing the UN number?
- Yes. Send the battery and equipment information and mark the classification as pending rather than guessing an entry.
- Does installation inside equipment remove the need for review?
- No. Explain the battery, equipment and actual arrangement, then establish the applicable requirements.
- Can lithium batteries move by LCL?
- That depends on the actual cargo, route and available service. Resolve the pre-dispatch review before sending goods to the warehouse.
- Does an older UN38.3 summary automatically expire?
- Do not decide from its date alone. Check design correspondence, changes, applicable requirements and any issuer updates; distinguish those checks from a carrier request for additional documents.
- Is a test summary the same as a full test report?
- No. They are different documents. Our formal lithium-battery FCL checklist requests the test report. Start an enquiry with available evidence, then resolve applicable requirements; neither document is a carrier acceptance.
- Can damaged batteries use the normal plan?
- Do not assume so. Disclose the actual condition early and obtain a separate assessment before arranging transport.
