Ten DG Shipping Questions Worth Asking Early
“We shipped it before.” “Can you make this sailing?” These are reasonable questions. They become harder when the answer arrives after the plan is already committed.

Short Answer
The goal is not to win an argument with a customer. It is to turn a short question into a shared understanding of the cargo, scope, deadline and information needed to proceed.
Classification, packing and acceptance remain subject to the current edition of applicable regulations, carrier review and port requirements. Confirm before shipment.
Questions about the cargo
1. “We shipped it before.” Send the earlier record alongside the current documents. 2. “It is the same product.” Confirm whether formulation, configuration and packaging are unchanged.
3. “It is only a sample.” Explain what is inside and how much; the word “sample” does not describe the transport conditions. 4. “The MSDS is attached.” Add the quantity, packaging and proposed destination so the file has a shipment context.
Questions about price and responsibility
5. “Another quote is cheaper.” Compare the same service boundary and charging basis. 6. “What does a forwarder add?” Ask which reviews, arrangements and handovers are covered.
7. “You have our old files.” Identify the current version and confirm what has changed. A retained file is a reference, not permission to reuse every detail without checking.
Questions about time
8. “Can we make this sailing?” Check the actual review and operational deadlines, not just departure. 9. “We already promised delivery.” Share that commitment early and distinguish port arrival from final delivery.
10. “Can you ask the carrier to make it work?” Coordination can clarify options, but it is not a substitute for acceptance. The useful result is a confirmed next step—not an unqualified yes.
Questions I get asked about this
- Should customers avoid these questions?
- No. Ask early and share the facts that make a useful answer possible.
- How should I compare prices?
- Use the same cargo information and service scope, with clear inclusions and exclusions.
- What if delivery is already promised?
- State the exact destination and required date, then review feasibility without assuming the promise can be met.
- What makes the first discussion productive?
- A current document set, shipment details and a clear list of unresolved points.
