API & Intermediate Shipping from Shanghai
For APIs and pharmaceutical intermediates, start with the material itself—not just its pharmaceutical use.
The short version
Identify the material, review its transport status, then agree the quality conditions and service scope.

Short Answer
Active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates may be non-DG or DG depending on their actual properties. Their pharmaceutical use does not determine sea-transport classification. We review the cargo documents, packaging, applicable inspection and stated quality conditions before proposing a shipment plan; temperature-controlled or other specialist handling requires separate confirmation.
Classification, packing and acceptance remain subject to the current edition of applicable regulations, carrier review and port requirements. Confirm before shipment.
What actually ships in this category?
An active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is a substance or mixture intended for use in manufacturing a drug and to become its active ingredient. API is a pharmaceutical term here, not a software interface.
A pharmaceutical intermediate undergoes further molecular change or purification before it becomes an API. It should not simply be described as a finished medicine.
This page focuses on export enquiries for APIs and intermediates. It does not present finished-medicine distribution, validated cold-chain operations or pharmaceutical certification as an existing capability.
Please state the manufacturer’s handling and quality requirements at the outset. Temperature, moisture, light, contamination and odour restrictions may affect the service choice, even when the cargo is non-DG.
What information should we check?
These are review fields, not default classifications. Establish the applicable classification from product evidence and current rules; confirm carrier acceptance separately.
| Field | Review point | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Material identity | API or pharmaceutical intermediate | Use the actual product specification; do not infer its regulatory identity from a commercial description. |
| Sea-transport classification | Review the actual hazards | Pharmaceutical use does not automatically establish either DG or non-DG status. |
| Quality conditions | Product-specific handling requirements | Provide the manufacturer’s requirements; specialist temperature control must be confirmed separately. |
| Service scope | Agreed export and freight arrangements | Do not assume pharmaceutical distribution or destination services are included. |
Review fields, not an approval
What information and documents should we prepare?
This is our review and coordination checklist, not a universal statutory document list. The applicable items and responsible parties depend on the actual cargo, route and service.
- Product identity, specification and matching SDSRequired
For our initial review of the actual material and its transport properties.
- Packaging, weights, route and quality requirementsRequired
Include any moisture, light, contamination or temperature restrictions.
- Transport appraisal and inspection documentsConditional
Confirm transport classification and applicable hazardous-chemical export inspection separately.
- Batch, quality and destination documentationConditional
Prepare as required for the actual product, customer and destination; do not substitute these for transport documents.
- Temperature-control or monitoring specificationConditional
Required for evaluating a requested specialist arrangement, not a promise that it is available.
Should this go FCL or LCL?
Full container
FCL may offer a dedicated loading environment, but it does not automatically provide temperature control or a validated pharmaceutical supply chain. Confirm the required conditions and available handling before booking.
Consolidation
LCL suitability depends on acceptance, packaging, quantity and quality restrictions as well as DG status. Non-DG cargo may still be unsuitable for a particular consolidation environment.
What actually goes wrong?
These are review points to resolve before dispatch, not findings about a particular shipment.
01Classifying by end use
An ingredient used in medicines is not necessarily toxic DG, and pharmaceutical use does not make a hazardous substance non-DG.
02Assuming cold-chain service is included
Provide a defined temperature or monitoring requirement early. Standard freight arrangements do not establish a validated cold chain.
03Documents that describe different materials
Match the SDS, product specification and shipment description. A report for an intermediate cannot automatically be used for a different API.
What does the carrier actually review?
Carrier review is not guaranteed acceptance
I review the cargo information and coordinate the proposed scope. Routine booking, documents and milestones are handled by company operations. Specialist quality conditions, carrier acceptance and any destination services require explicit confirmation.
Name the material precisely
Clarify whether the shipment is an API or an intermediate and provide its actual specification.
Review transport and inspection
Check the SDS and supporting evidence, separating DG classification from applicable export inspection.
Confirm quality and scope
Discuss packaging, handling restrictions and any specialist requirements before committing to a service.
Coordinate the export
Align the agreed freight arrangements and document handovers with the cargo-ready date.
Questions I get asked most often
- What does API mean?
- API means active pharmaceutical ingredient: a substance or mixture intended for use in manufacturing a drug and to become its active ingredient.
- Are APIs automatically dangerous goods?
- No. Review the actual material and its applicable sea-transport classification. The same applies to pharmaceutical intermediates.
- Are pharmaceutical intermediates finished medicines?
- Not simply by being used in pharmaceutical production. An intermediate undergoes further molecular change or purification before becoming an API.
- Does this service include a pharmaceutical cold chain?
- Not by default. State the product’s requirements first; specialist facilities, handling conditions and service scope must be separately confirmed.
