UN Number: What to Check Before Booking
A UN number starts a conversation. It does not describe the whole shipment. Before it becomes a booking field, the important question is whether the number, the supporting documents and the goods being offered actually belong together.

Short Answer
Check a UN number together with the proper shipping name, hazard class and other applicable information for the actual product. Do not infer a class from its first digits or assume every entry has a packing group. If the number is unconfirmed, say so. Establish the supporting basis before relying on it for packaging, acceptance or shipment planning.
Classification, packing and acceptance remain subject to the current edition of applicable regulations, carrier review and port requirements. Confirm before shipment.
Why does a forwarder ask for more than the number?
The source matters. A supplier document, an old shipment record and an online answer are not interchangeable evidence. Identify which product the number describes and how that product will be presented for this shipment.
Submit the product reference, document issuer and revision together. This makes the review traceable and avoids asking an overseas agent or a China-side operations colleague to reconcile several unrelated attachments.
What if the commercial and transport names differ?
A sales name identifies the commercial product; a proper shipping name serves a transport purpose. Different wording does not automatically establish an error. What matters is a clear connection between the goods and their supporting transport information.
Where documents contradict each other, list the discrepancy and ask the issuer to explain it. Do not choose whichever description appears easier to ship, or alter a supplier document merely to make the fields look consistent.
Does a blank packing-group field always mean missing data?
First establish whether it applies. Not every UN entry has a packing group. An unconfirmed value and a genuinely inapplicable field are different situations, and neither should be concealed by selecting a convenient form option.
Likewise, identifying an entry is not the same as approving the packing arrangement. Packaging, cargo configuration and acceptance still require their own checks. A successful number lookup is only one part of that discussion.
How useful are old records and AI lookup results?
They can help identify questions, but they do not establish the basis for the actual goods. Check whether the product or configuration has changed before reusing an old record. When another party supplies an answer, ask what information it was based on.
AI can help organise an enquiry; it should not be the sole authority behind a declared classification. Avoid sharing confidential customer documents with third-party tools without appropriate permission and safeguards.
How can you enquire when the UN number is unknown?
Write that it is pending confirmation. Send the product description, available SDS, packaging, quantity, origin, destination and timing. Include any conflicting information rather than removing it to make the enquiry look complete.
My role is to coordinate the initial plan and the questions that need resolution. We should identify what the evidence supports and who needs to clarify the remaining points before treating a number as settled.
What a review is not
A carrier review is an assessment against that carrier's own current requirements, made by the carrier. It is not a guarantee, and it is not something a forwarder can convert into one. What we can do is make the submission accurate and complete, and tell you early when something will not work.
Sources and scope
These official references provide background, not a complete shipment checklist or acceptance approval. US guidance from PHMSA or OSHA does not replace Shanghai export requirements. Confirm the applicable rules and carrier requirements for the actual shipment.
Common questions
- Can I request a price with only a UN number?
- You can begin a preliminary discussion, but packaging, quantity, routing and timing are also needed to assess a workable scope and price.
- Can the first digits tell me the hazard class?
- Do not infer a class from them. Check the complete entry against the actual product information.
- Does every UN number have a packing group?
- No. Establish whether the field applies. Distinguish not applicable from not yet confirmed, and do not select a group simply to complete a form.
- Must the invoice product name match the proper shipping name word for word?
- Different purposes can produce different names. Keep a clear link between them and ask the document issuer to resolve any contradiction.
- Can a number from the previous shipment be reused?
- Only after checking its relevance to the current product, shipping configuration and applicable requirements. The earlier movement alone is not proof.
- Can I enquire before the number is confirmed?
- Yes. State the uncertainty and provide the available product information. A visible question is more useful than an unsupported declaration.
