Lithium Battery Shipping Guide

A battery shipment is not defined by the words “lithium battery” alone. Before choosing a sailing, connect the actual battery, its shipping arrangement and its documents into one consistent picture.

Short Answer

For an initial sea-freight assessment, provide the battery type and model, how it is shipped, its condition, quantity and packaging, together with available supporting documents. A test summary is not a booking approval. Resolve gaps before treating a price or schedule as a confirmed plan.

Classification, packing and acceptance remain subject to the current edition of applicable regulations, carrier review and port requirements. Confirm before shipment.

What exactly is leaving the factory?

Identify the battery manufacturer, model and type, and describe whether it is shipped alone, packed with equipment or installed in equipment. Include the equipment model where relevant.

A battery pack, a machine containing a battery and a complete vehicle are not interchangeable descriptions. Avoid choosing a UN number from a similar product found online; have the actual arrangement reviewed.

How do the documents connect to the product?

Place the model on the product, the packing information and the available test documents side by side. Where the names differ, request a traceable explanation from the manufacturer rather than assuming a match.

A UN38.3 test summary and a full test report are different documents. Our formal lithium-battery FCL booking checklist requests the report; at enquiry stage, send available evidence and identify gaps. PHMSA’s linked explanation helps with test-summary terminology, but is US guidance, not the Shanghai booking checklist.

Does an older date make a document unusable?

Do not decide from the date alone. Establish whether the document relates to the actual design, whether the product has changed and whether the issuer has supplied a replacement.

Do not describe a carrier’s request for supporting information as a universal expiry rule. If review raises a concern, ask what evidence is missing and who can supply it. Keep design evidence separate from shipment acceptance.

Which practical details should be raised early?

State whether the goods are new, used, returned, recalled, damaged or intended for recycling. Report swelling, leakage or other abnormalities before arranging collection; do not assume a normal battery service is suitable.

Provide package dimensions, count, weights and photographs that you are authorised to share. Explain any handling constraints. The review should connect the paperwork with the actual packages, not stop at the product name.

How should FCL and LCL be compared?

First confirm whether a suitable service can consider the goods on the requested route. A small quantity does not by itself establish LCL suitability, and FCL does not cure missing documents.

Then compare origin handling, total charges, receiving windows and the required arrival point. For an exhibition, distinguish arrival at port from arrival at the venue and identify who handles the onward leg.

What a review is not

A carrier review is an assessment against that carrier's own current requirements, made by the carrier. It is not a guarantee, and it is not something a forwarder can convert into one. What we can do is make the submission accurate and complete, and tell you early when something will not work.

Sources and scope

These official references provide background, not a complete shipment checklist or acceptance approval. US guidance from PHMSA or OSHA does not replace Shanghai export requirements. Confirm the applicable rules and carrier requirements for the actual shipment.

Common questions

Can I send only an MSDS?
It can start the conversation. Add the actual model, shipping arrangement, quantity, packaging and route, and identify which documents are still pending.
Does a UN38.3 summary guarantee the booking?
No. Supporting evidence and carrier acceptance are separate matters.
Should every older summary be replaced?
Do not assume this from its date. Check design correspondence, any changes and issuer information, then clarify the current submission request.
Can batteries installed in equipment be treated as ordinary cargo?
Do not decide from installation alone. Provide the equipment and battery details for assessment.
Can a damaged battery use the same plan as a new battery?
Do not assume so. Disclose its condition before transport is arranged and obtain a specific assessment.
What should an overseas forwarder send first?
The current product documents, model details, shipping configuration, package list, origin, destination and required arrival date. Mark unresolved information clearly.
