SDS Transport Review: Evidence Before Booking
An SDS starts a useful conversation when it can be linked to the actual product. Forwarding an attachment without checking that link can simply pass an unresolved question to the next person.

Short Answer
Link the document to the actual product, review the transport information and cross-check relevant hazards, properties and supporting evidence. Clarify contradictions with the issuer instead of editing the conclusion to suit the booking. Classification evidence, packaging and the proposed service require separate checks.
Classification, packing and acceptance remain subject to the current edition of applicable regulations, carrier review and port requirements. Confirm before shipment.
Start with the product behind the document
Different names are not automatically an error, and identical names do not prove identical formulations. Ask the supplier to explain the relationship between trade names, models and document versions.
If a formulation is confidential, identify the specific technical question and use an appropriate channel. Do not request proprietary details in a public discussion merely to complete a checklist.
Read the transport information in context
Check the stated transport mode and compare the information with the actual product, relevant hazards and physical properties. Do not carry a statement for one mode across to sea transport without checking its applicability.
Where information disagrees, record the discrepancy and request clarification or supporting evidence. An article, one flash-point value or a commercial name is not a complete product classification.
What does a non-DG statement establish?
It records the transport conclusion in that document. Check that it covers the actual product and intended transport conditions, rather than a different formulation, state or generic template.
Packaging, contamination protection, temperature, destination requirements and service acceptance can still affect the plan. Non-DG does not mean no handling conditions, and DG does not mean automatic exclusion from LCL.
Make discrepancies easy to resolve
Create a short query list: document version, product relationship, discrepancy, requested clarification and responsible party. Keep the updated files traceable so all participants work from the same information.
Do not delete inconvenient facts or rewrite a UN entry without evidence. Technical questions belong with the party able to substantiate the product information; acceptance questions belong with the actual service provider.
Send a useful first enquiry
Include the product use and form, matching SDS, packaging, quantity, gross weight, volume, origin and destination. Mark uncertain classification as pending rather than guessing fields.
I separate product-information questions from routing and timing questions. Operations colleagues then follow bookings, documents and milestones. Submitting information is not the same as obtaining carrier acceptance.
What a review is not
A carrier review is an assessment against that carrier's own current requirements, made by the carrier. It is not a guarantee, and it is not something a forwarder can convert into one. What we can do is make the submission accurate and complete, and tell you early when something will not work.
Sources and scope
These official references provide background, not a complete shipment checklist or acceptance approval. US guidance from PHMSA or OSHA does not replace Shanghai export requirements. Confirm the applicable rules and carrier requirements for the actual shipment.
Common questions
- Does a non-DG SDS statement guarantee a general cargo booking?
- No. Check product and transport-mode correspondence, resolve discrepancies and confirm the actual service conditions.
- Must the invoice use exactly the supplier document name?
- Names can differ for legitimate reasons. Obtain a traceable explanation linking them to the actual goods.
- Does an older SDS automatically need replacement?
- Check product or information changes, applicable requirements and the recipient’s needs. Do not decide from age alone.
- Can a forwarder change the UN number?
- Not without supporting evidence. Clarify the classification with the responsible party and update affected records accordingly.
- Does a carrier’s extra document request prove the SDS is defective?
- Not necessarily. Separate applicable SDS requirements, supporting evidence and shipment-specific booking requests.
- Can I enquire before classification is settled?
- Yes. Send available information and identify the unresolved points instead of inventing a value.

Cargo name, UN number if you have it, quantity, packaging, destination and the date it has to be there. If the classification is unsettled, say so and attach the MSDS.
