Shanghai Port General Cargo LCL

Shanghai Port general cargo LCL — the consolidation process for non-dangerous cargo, cut-off timing, and how bookings are confirmed.

The short version

Confirm the quoted weight-or-measure basis, minimums and destination fees, then meet the agreed receiving windows.

Short Answer

LCL is commonly quoted on a weight-or-measure basis. Check the conversion rules, minimums and individual charges in the actual quotation, together with receiving and consolidation deadlines.

Classification, packing and acceptance remain subject to the current edition of applicable regulations, carrier review and port requirements. Confirm before shipment.

How does an export move through this port?

These are coordination stages with dependencies, not a strictly sequential checklist. Document preparation, actual loading and customs work may progress in parallel.

  1. Cargo details and measurement

Package count, dimensions, gross weight and volume. Accurate measurement matters because it drives the chargeable weight directly.

  2. Rate basis confirmation

Confirm whether the rate is per revenue tonne, per w/m, or subject to a minimum, and which basis applies on the specific trade lane.

  3. Booking and cargo receiving

Booking with the carrier or consolidator, cargo received at the warehouse, and a loading plan that keeps weight distribution workable.

  4. Loading and documentation

Container loading, export documentation, VGM filing and sealing.

  5. Sailing confirmation

Track estimated and actual sailing updates, follow agreed bill of lading procedures and confirm destination handover.

What information and documents should we prepare?

This is our review and coordination checklist, not a universal statutory document list. The applicable items and responsible parties depend on the actual cargo, route and service.

  • Commercial invoiceRequired
  • Packing listRequired

With accurate dimensions — this drives the chargeable volume.

  • Existing booking referenceConditional

If already booked; not an initial enquiry prerequisite.

  • Bill of lading instructionsConditional

Prepared for the relevant documentation stage.

  • Packed-container VGM arrangementsConditional

Confirm who provides consignment weight and who verifies and submits VGM for the consolidated container.

  • Certificate of originConditional

When required by the destination or trade agreement.

What actually matters at this port

Cut-off discipline matters more with LCL

LCL cargo has to be received, grouped and loaded as part of a shared container. Missing the cargo receiving window means missing the sailing, regardless of how early the booking was made.

Measure before you quote

An estimate that turns out to be short on volume means a revised chargeable weight later. Measure the packed cartons rather than the goods.

Compare the full quotation

Check origin, ocean, documentation and destination charges, calculation bases and exclusions. A low ocean line item does not establish the total cost; do not guess the reason for it.

What can hold up a shipment?

Check these potential hold points against the actual booking and cargo.

  1. Cargo received after the receiving window

Cargo missing the receiving window may not join the planned container. Reconfirm acceptance, storage, charges and the next workable service; the next sailing is not automatic.

  2. Volume measurement differs from the quote

Chargeable weight is recalculated from the actual measurement, and the invoice reflects that rather than the estimate.

Questions I get about this

How is LCL freight charged from Shanghai?
Normally on a revenue tonne basis: the greater of volume in cubic metres and weight in tonnes. Some lanes apply a minimum chargeable quantity, and some are quoted on a weight or measure basis. The basis needs confirming per trade lane.
What is a minimum chargeable quantity?
Some trade lanes charge a minimum volume regardless of the actual cargo size, so a small shipment can be billed as a larger one. It is worth asking whether a quoted rate includes it.
Why do LCL quotes differ so much between forwarders?
Most often because of what the rate includes — origin charges, documentation, terminal handling and destination fees vary a lot in how they are presented. Compare the total, not the headline rate.
How early should I book general cargo LCL?
Earlier than most people expect, because the cargo has to be received and grouped before the container is loaded. Tell me the required arrival date and I will work backwards through the cut-offs.
Can the same shipment be FCL and LCL?
Sometimes it is split across both modes, but they are separate bookings with separate cargo descriptions and separate cut-offs. Worth planning deliberately rather than as a fallback.

Before you book

Classification, packing and acceptance remain subject to the current edition of applicable regulations, carrier review and port requirements. Final dangerous goods acceptance is made by the carrier after document review — submitting a request through this website is a preliminary assessment, not a booking confirmation.
